Formula 1 fans have called on the FIA to make a rule change after Carlos Sainz was handed a grid penalty after being involved in a freak accident.

“The umpires noted that if they had had the authority to grant an exception in what they considered in this case to be extenuating, unusual and unfortunate circumstances, they would have done so, but the regulations do not permit such action.”

“It has completely changed my mentality and opinion on the weekend and how things will go from here on out. I feel disappointed and in disbelief about the situation.
“You won’t see me very happy this weekend.”
“You have to say it’s force majeure, and it’s not their doing. It’s a very unfortunate and unique incident. I was a bit surprised to see that,” Brown added.
“I think we need to provide more support if something like this happens. I would support them not getting a penalty.”
