The Greatwood Hurdle and Jonbon will dominate the newspaper today – but I want to dig deeper into the story of the two horses.
Wonderwall and City Chief run respectively in the Cavani Novices’ Handicap Limited Handicap Chase and the Jewison Handicap Chase live on ITV.

Why is this remotely interesting you may ask? Well, they met at Doncaster at the first hurdle in January 2022, when the then-hot Wonderwall defeated City Chief by an easy three lengths.
Since then their careers have gone in different ways. Wonderwall didn’t make a lot of jumps and was rated at 132. City Chief is 10 pounds higher at 142. It’s weird how things are going.
Wonderwall racing is such a nightmare that I will get a chance to get James Bowen and Richard Spencer’s career back on track.
Freeze was last seen at Cesarwitch in Newmarket. It’s a big risk but let’s hope that “today is the day that wins for you and me”!

In the City Chief over three miles and three furlongs, TRUCKERS LODGE is interesting although he is 11 now and clearly not going to improve – in fact he will be 12 in just over a month.
He has everything in his favor to run a huge match here for champion Paul Nicholls and Freddie Gyngell, who takes off 5 pounds.
The big boy loves to work hard in the mud and finished last season with a win at Ffos Las by 132 points. He’s still a good handicapper here at his best at 137 and should have a chance either way.
Move up in class to take the Grade 2 feature Shloer Chase over two miles. If there is a champion in this field, there is no doubt for me that it is Junpun and he is the chosen one.
Most read in horse racing
Trained by Nicky Henderson, Gunbon was top-class last season and has scored in top-class company at Aintree and Sandown and suggests he can mix it with the best this term.
Whether it’s more than two miles or just two and a half miles will determine, but this should be a good starting point.
As for the Greatwood Hurdle, well, time can only be given to Willie Mullins, but I’m happy with the chance to take second place to last year’s GIN COCO which is only 2lbs heavier than when he was chasing the late I Like to Move It at this time of year the past. .
My choice was never entered into the chase when I was interested in running the County Hurdle in March, but he should be up for it after a comeback effort at Ffos Las last time out.
