Manchester United star Alex Buttner has revealed he was in a chip state when Sir Alex Ferguson signed him.

But the 34-year-old is now enjoying a completely different football life after moving to the Dutch second tier.

Buttner was snapped up by United In 2012 for just £5 million after starring with his first professional club, Vitesse Arnhem.

The left-back scored ten goals in 119 matches with his club.

And Sir Alex couldn’t resist bringing him to Old Trafford For transaction fees.

“I thought it was a big joke because when I was visiting another club, there was a Manchester United book in one of the stadiums, so I said to my agent: ‘Take a picture of me with the book and we will do it.’ I pretend I am in England to sign for Manchester United.

“I thought it would be a piece of cake because my friends knew I went to England.

“Then a week later, my agent called me when I was in the chip shop and said: ‘Alex, it’s Manchester United.’

“I just thought, ‘Damn, but he was really serious.’ Everyone around me looked at me and wondered what was going on.

“All my teammates looked at me and I said: ‘We’re going to Manchester!’ Then everyone went crazy. The chip shop was upside down. It was a great moment.

“Celebrating the biggest move of your life at your local chip shop. My brother jumped on the table, and my colleagues got angry.”

Following his time at United, Buttner moved to Russia with Dynamo Moscow before moving on loan to Belgian side Anderlecht.

He then re-signed with Vitesse in 2016 before moving to the MLS with New England four years later.

In 2021, Buttner returned to his homeland with Dutch side Waalwijk.

He is now in his second season with Dutch second division club De Graafschap, where he has made two appearances so far this season.
