Ronnie O’Sullivan says he considered having a hip replacement to boost his snooker game – despite there being nothing wrong with the joint.

“I thought my hip was rotating too much, which didn’t allow me to shoot properly.

“So I asked my father‘What do we count?’ I’m thinking about getting a new hip. If I get that solid hip, I’ll never go wrong.

“It’s a repetitive sport. If I can get it in the right direction repeatedly – with my talent – I’ll never lose.

“He thought I was crazy but I thought it was very sensitive.

“I know I was a bit angry but I was tough. I wanted to play snooker. I wanted to win titles and that meant a lot to me.”

It’s one of the strange discoveries in a new documentary titled Ronnie O’Sullivan: The edge of it allWhich will be released this week in cinemas and on Amazon Prime Video.

It focuses on how he became the sport’s greatest teacher and covers his battles with depression, a dysfunctional upbringing, and how he considered quitting snooker when his father was sent to prison for murder in 1992.

He said: “People listen to the chaos in my life and can’t believe how I can play snooker.

“I say this is the only time I really have peace – no one can get to me. I’m safe here.”

A camera crew followed O’Sullivan backstage as he won a record-equalling seventh world title in 2022.

It embodies the doubts and fears he experienced in the locker room during his last two days with him Judd Trump.

He won 18-13 but bared his soul to psychiatrist Steve Peters during the four sessions, saying: “I feel sick from the pressure. It’s terrible. I hate it.”
